Pressburger film, "The Canterbury Tales." Recall the scene wherein the ape throws the bone upward and it morphs into the spaceship? P & P did the exact thing, years earlier, when a man in Chaucer's tale flings an object and suddenly it becomes an airplane in modern (WWII, at the time) England. Since Kubrick was an Anglophile, choosing to live his life there and an avid film buff, this certainly was a case of deep admiration. I've not read this before, anywhere.

This forum and Netflix streaming are good resources for film fans. I had never heard of the film and would not have bought or rented the disc. Streaming is wonderful. I'm not sure how much I liked the film but it was worthwhile to see. I'm not sure I understand the motivation behind Colpepper/Glueman. I haven't read Chaucer in more than forty years and don't remember details of the Canterbury Tales. The film did make me want to visit the cathedral and seeing contemporary footage of WWII devastation
was interesting.

I already loved Powell and Pressburger but Stan Brakhage's film classes at the 'Tute made me appreciate the Archers even more.
I've always maintained that the Powell/Archers run of films in the 40's to early 50s - Thief Of Baghdad, 49th Parallel, One of Our Aircraft Is Missing, The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp, A Canterbury Tale, I Know Where I'm Going, A Matter Of Life & Death, The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, The Small Back Room, Gone To Earth and Peeping Tom - is one of the most amazing runs of filmmaking in movie history. Major, major stuff. Sometimes it seems only Scorsese was paying attention, but, of course, we have the evidence that Kubrick was impressed enough to steal one of Powell's most iconic images.
Funny you should bring this up now; I just re-watched A Canterbury Tale in February.

I'll second that, even though I've only seen Black Narcissus, and Peeping Tom, two compulsively watchable classics.
I sure am, however I do not think Netflix has 'One of Our Aircraft Is Missing'
I found the '49th Parallel' to be one of their most unique efforts, breezy and enjoyable with Laurence Olivier and Leslie Howard.
The rest are terrific. I look forward to 'The Thief of Bagdad' coming my way soon.
