I just saw this film for the first time. Very strong performances by Nicholson and Streep along with excellent cinematography.

Follow Ups:
I love Ironweed too, but have yet to find a widescreen version yet on DVD. Tom Waites is terrific in this as well.Into director Jim Jaramusch? His "Down by Law" (great score by Tom Waites), and more recently "Ghost Dog" are unique independent films with gritty tone.
Suggestion: You may like "The Great Santini" (1979); It's very well done picture about a Marine pilot and his family living in the Southern US , with Robert Duvall and Blythe Danner. (It may have been made for TV, but is available on DVD.)

I wonder if it was filmed in 4:3 intentionally. Waits was very good as he has been in every performance I've seen.

I did a search and confirmed it was released in widescreen. I have no idea why the DVD was done in 4.3 but it wasn't an artistic decision. :-)

Having first seen Ironweed on broadcast TV, I always supposed that it was intended as a TV special movie.
Thanks for confirming its widescreen possibility.
