The Korean film industry is peaking. Their dark, bizarre, brilliant imaginations surpass any others in the world. This film takes the "revenge" concept to an entirely new plane of 'evening the score'. This well-written story takes just over two gripping hours to come to resolution and there's nary a nod nor blink from the viewer.
Kim Soo-hyeon is an undercover operative within Korea's law enforcement structure. One snowy night his wife has a flat on a less traveled road. He tells her to not accept help from anyone that the tow service will be there. When Kyung-chul stops to offer help he won't take no for an answer. He brutally beats the pregnant wife senseless in the graphic Korean way. She ends up in Kyung's lair only to be terrorized and butchered.
When Kim finds his wife has been slaughtered he requests two weeks off to address his grief. His police chief father-in-law gets him the files of the four most likely suspects and Kim sets off on a journey of revenge never to be seen nor forgotten again.
Once Kim locates and does battle with Kyung the first time, he leaves Kyung unconscious with an envelope of escape money and a locater device forced into his belly. From here a game of cat and mouse begins where Kim follows Kyung's escape path and crime spree just to interfere and beat and cripple him to the point of near death.
The cinematography, lighting, art direction, and editing makes striking visual statements while quickly pacing the story along it's winding but compelling path.
Brutal, bloody, and filled with dark humor this film entertains and keeps you on edge. During one of Kyung's beatings I noticed my head bobbing up and down with each strike as if I were saying: "Beat him again harder!"
I guess I liked it. You will too.

as the violence was all directed at women. It was two well-done hours.
As a matter of fact, many people liked "The Chaser" despite their views on violence and women....
Here is one such fan here......

I've said this before, I've been watching Korean movies for about 10 years now, and I've never seen a country's cinema so...angry and intense. Revenge seems to be their specialty.
Its brutal, bloody and filled with dark humor-so are their romantic comedies! I just wished they would lighten up a bit.
I have no doubt its a good movie, and eventually I'll probably end up getting it, but geez another revenge film.

You WILL regret doing so, especially if they sensed that you liked this moribund tale of blood.
I really like Korean movies, but this one was a bit too derivative of movies like "Hostel" and "Saw" I thought.

Trying to hold someone done while hitting them in the head with a spike and hammer is pretty rough.

Also the case when you have a predilection for bourgois-orientated dross like Chabrol & Tarkovsky.
"Nothing to worry about, dear, it's just Jeff; when he's slaked, he'll fall off."
...Tin's bourgoise wife has growing problems..
Stupidity is SO cool.
... I missed out an 'e', it's not so important.
We all make mistakes.
Don't we?

It's on my list. What's your shrink's name and does he (she) accept non-VA patients?
