.....than original was 'Empire strikes back'.
However, Lucas really ruined the series, turning it into play pen for Ewoks and other fuzzy critters, sorry for my anti-non-human bias.
Follow Ups:
...but I don't buy it.
I'll take SW any day over TESB. The actorly direction was better in Empire but the camera didn't dance and the screen didn't sing.
But I agree re SW VI, smothered in cuteness. Yech.
.........I grew up.
...and thus arguably grown-up...when SW came out. And in truth, I was a wee bit disappointed that SW was so specifically aimed at 12-14 YOs. However, I got over it. I'd also seen Lucas' THX1138 and American Graffitti when they came out in theaters.
For leaden dialogue foisted on good actors SW is seldom surpassed.
However, in purely cinematic terms, the images in SW are more vivid and memorable, primo examples of epic visual storytelling. The opening scene alone tells you pretty much all you need to know about the rebels vs the Empire. And the camera moves and dances in a particularly fluid way that the two sequels - despite the big battle sequences - never quite achieve. (I also see them now as the beginning sof the more is not enough syndrome that afflicted Lucas in the prequels.)
The exhuberance of that first film was quite seductive, even for a sci-fi starved twenty something.
The acting and line readings are much better in part 5, no question. And TESB is structurally tauter. But I don't love it more. I think it has just as many faults, in a slightly less interesting way.
.....now about your taste as a cineste.
Yes, I agree cinematically SW is better than ESB. But as I have grown up, I began to appreciate fine acting and structure of the plot more.
"Fine acting and plot" in TESB???? PLOT??? LOL!
OK then. Let me catch my breath...
I did say I was going against received wisdom. And after 50 years of watching movies and 35 of being a serious film fan I'm not too concerned about the relative merits of SWs eps.
BTW, I feel plot, as commonly used, is overrated.
....compared to SW.
Btw. I agree the plot is over-rated, and that's why I outgrew them.
Star Trek, the Wrath of Kahn. Light years better than the first
Rocky III, arguably better than I.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
....but I don't agree on Rocky. I am not saying I was better tHan III, not really worse either.
loved em both, but the followup, with the theme of the protagonist who's gone "soft" facing an antagonist who was hungry and wildly talented, worked for me. Casting Mr. T worked to a "T".
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"

.
...I am a fan of 'Once upon a time in America'.
...quality of sequel, not on any particular sympathy for it.
J
I'd also add T2 over the original.

...I do agree I liked T2 better than the original.
Now, not so much. I did go see the recent one, but it was only so-so. Haven't seen one of the Schwartz T's for many years.
