I got the European region B Blu-Ray of "The Dam Busters" from 1954. I hadn't seen it in 30 years, and remember it as pretty good movie, but there was something in it that shocked me, for its seemingly inexplicable inappropriateness. Richard Todd stars as the squadron commander who trains to lead a unique RAF bombing mission, and it's a true story. The first time he's introduced to us, he's returning from a sortee, and getting out of the plane, he's greeted by his adoring black labrador named-now get this-the dog's name is Ni**er-I kid you not. He said it at least five times, when talking to the dog. It was crazy. The American version has it revoiced (so I read at IMDB) as "Trigger." I was so shocked, it took me out of the movie like I was shot out of a cannon. Has anyone seen this version of the film, and experienced the same shock?

"The N word was commonly used in British Commonwealth countries at that time, without racist overtones."
It still is, from some recent mainstream British TV program DVDs I got. And by *white people* too. Not so in British Commonwealth Canada I'd have to say...
...and I think the final 3rd of the film is thrilling. The cross cutting from the flight mission back and forth with the silence of the "war room" awaiting news of the results is precise as the bombing runs, which by the way, were the inspiration for the bombing attack on the Death Star from the first Star Wars movie. The Blu-Ray picture is well transferred, and the sound (as I mentioned earlier) is very well designed to support the tension in the story. The heroic score by Eric Coates was moving. As far as the dog's name is concerned, your comment clarified its proper context. I believe the spirit of the sentiment was honorable. What times we live in!
