this year. Actually, it's the funniest film I've seen in recent memory, including "Hangover." This film is far better, though it has as many hilarious slapstick scenes: it also has a serious side and far more clever writing. Paul Feig, the director, has a terrific sense of pace. The film doesn't fall apart, as many of our comedies do, between the visual gags. Kristen Wiig is a superstar comedienne and a brainy blonde: she wrote it.
The night I saw it, there was a good mix of men and women. The audience laughter was hysterical for much of it. This most definitely is NOT a chick flick.
GO SEE IT NOW!
Follow Ups:
saw this yesterday after hearing many good things.
Yes, it is both funny and has a heart. It may well be the most fun I've had at the movies this year. I heard some critics say that the gross scene in the dress shop was unnecessary. But I liked that too and laughed along with the audience. It all worked for me, start to finish.
I was most surprised that the movie had a tone of legitimacy -- not the total off the wall tone of most comedies. I was also surprised that Kristen Wiig was good. Neither my wife nor I were fans (my wife can't stand her), but we both thought she was really good. I noticed that she co-wrote the movie as well. The scenes on the airplane were priceless.
It was interesting to see the heavy girl from that sitcom "Mike and Molly". She was great. I had no idea she could do comedy.
Fun stuff with heart.
Like that's the gold standard of contemporary comedy? Yeeesh.
Spoiler-
Almost died laughing when she was pretending not to be sick at the wedding dress boutique.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
...was being able to look like a little feral animal in scenes like that one.

...one of the year's best so far.
It has far more going on then the trailers show.
Kristen Wiig should be nominated for best actress.
Too bad comedians aren't recognized.
