Too many of his films are in the superior category to rank.

fugues or cantatas, Beethoven sonatas or symphonies, Leonardo paintings, etc. Kubrick was an amazing talent. Lolita was a magnificent comedy/satire. Lyndon a superb historical/lyrical piece. 2001: great sci-fi (and much more). FMJ: superb war film.
I have no doubts that had he made a Western, it too would have been among the best ever.
I often wonder what "One Eyed Jacks" would have been like if he'd stayed with the project.

Well put, as each Kubrick film is a masterwork of genre as well as art - as your examples show.
I've got to find Lolita; Sellers kills in it.
terrific, too. How many actresses have the self-confidence to play a role that self-critical? And Sue Lyons.... Nabokov actually must have been a sick man. In the book, Lolita is far younger, pre-adolescent. He also had a young girl at the center of another of his erogenous books ("Pale Fire," im memory serves). Humbert Humbert. What a character. And Clare Quilty. Genius. No other word.
