      Ryan has to be one of America's Worst Ever (AWE). It merely underlines Kubrick's genius that he could work with such an idiot.

        I wrote many times before that Kubrick made Ryan work well in his hands, I never said it was his acting talent.
        
        Be it as it may, he fit the role wonderfully, created a touching and deep character - who cares who or what guided him.

    Whatever possessed Kubrick to cast O'neal? Did he owe sumbuddy lots of money? He was OK in Paper Moon and What's Up Doc, but good Lord, Kubrick was at the peak of his career and he casts the relative non talent and non charismatic O'Neal as the male lead in a 3+ hour drama?

        n that space epic, acting was less important than in a period drama like BL, hence Dullea's woodeness was less of a distraction than R O's.
        
        I've only seen BL once, on its release, now after all this praise I'm gonna have to sit thru the damn thing again :)

  Of course he is great! BUT I think his work is getting weaker with time. A sign of not so great greatness.
