Blockbuster is getting smart... All they need to do now is to jump start the movie streaming. Competition is the engine of free market!
Right now their cost to stream is minimal. Their cost is about to go up substantially when current streaming contracts expire. Initial contracts for streaming rights were laughably cheap. That will change over the next 3 years. Hollywood will play hardball and there is more competition. By making pricing changes now, Netflix will build cash in anticipation of higher costs to stream in the future.
Personally, we downgraded to a streaming only plan. My wife and I have been able to find plenty to watch (foreign, obscure, old etc). We enjoyed the Stig Larson trilogy in original Swedish for example.
I dig the on demand ability of streaming.

business model: an incredible and VAST collection of art films from every important country on earth. Comcast? Just the same-old, same-old that any company offers. Unfortunately, there is VERY little price difference between them all. You get these great deals during your first year and then, WHAMMO! The big thumb to your eye comes out.
One of them is my gunsmith - he is so old-fashioned, he uses phone to communicate! You can't blame Comcast for giving the populous what it needs - mindless sport and dumb movies 24 hours a day. They would not make money off you and my gunsmith. I know of some people with very, very low income who pay well over $200 a month for their cable. Add to this the obligatory iPhone, etc and you are in the $300-400 a month territory, just for garbage.
My wife bitched and managed to get our Comcast bill down to $105... with very few channels.

I have Comcast and agree it blows. I think I pay around $120 a month for internet and cable with about 50 channels, of which I probably watch 5 99% of the time. A couple of my Comcast-subscribing friends have had good luck calling the Co. periodically to take advantage of the "new subscribers" rates offered every now and then.
It's too bad Comcast doesn't offer a package which let's one get more movie channels. I'd gladly trade all channels that show sports and (primarily) reality tv for a couple decent film channels.
only the package which offers Turner Classic Movies. This is $7/mo on top of the bare bones cable + High Speed internet. I think 12MB/s and a heafty hunk of web storage. If I had a 46" plasma screen I;d pay for the streaming.. as it is I was taking 3 DVD's a month for whatever it was... I'll probably go back to a two at a time plan come the Fall.
Then I'd complain!
:)
Cable companies are "given" monopoly districts. At least someone could try to compete with Netfilx.
Fucking cable companies.

Lets face it, the objective is to kill the dvd. At this point,if they would have to stand on streaming alone they are toast. By killing the dvd they pressure the content providers to make up for the lost sales of the dvd.
For my family, the attraction of the dvd is newer movies. The attraction for us with streaming is series that we can't get on cable and filling time while waiting for the next dvd to arrive. Therefore, streaming doesn't have the value to us that it does to some (at this point). The content for streaming just isn't there.
Another threat to the model could be the content providers doing their own streaming. We already have Sony streaming and MGM on cable. The barrier to entry of the market might be lower without having to buy all those dvds, especially if you already own the content.
I think they pulled the trigger too soon with the separation of dvd and streaming. It just puts it on the table that it can be one or the other(for now). At this point, I'm still in the dvd camp. If I want to watch old crappy movies I can just stick with cable.
And by the way, my increase would be $5.29
Because Netflix alreay jacked their prices up, what, a year ago?
increase was November 2010, which was $2.12 and I went from 3 dvds to 2 to offset some of the increase. I'll probably drop to one this time or stay at 2 and drop streaming.
art/foreign/classic films, you won't find them streaming anytime soon.
I don't know what their plans for expanding the streaming base are, but hope they are moving aggressively.

improvement of HD? Blu is a BIG step beyond that.

invest in a performance car. But, to live in an urban area and once in a blue moon get to blow it out? Crazy. It just makes you drive dangerously where you shouldn't, is my experience (10 years with an MR-2). I had the tickets and ridiculously expensive insurance to prove it, Vic. Prius, btw, has some "go." It isn't the slug you might think. I actually abuse it: it's a hatchback and when the back seats are folded down and a plastic mat installed, it mimics a pickup pretty well. I've been redoing a 1/2 to 2/3rds acre garden this year and it's hauled tons of stuff. It's a bullet-proof little machine.
I was with Netflix for ten years. Then they raised prices one time too many. Then they charged you extra for blu-ray. But the killer is THEY STOPPED RENTING BLU-RAYS.
For example, season four of 'House' they had on blu-ray, season five was dvd only. Season four of 'Supernatural' they had on blu-ray, season five they only bought on dvd. They used to have 'Dr. Who' on blu-ray, but when 'Waters of Mars' came out all they had was dvd.
I could go on and on.
So I signed up for blockbuster online. $19.95 for three discs at a time, no extra charge for blu-rays. I NOW HAVE 30 BLU-RAYS IN MY BLOCKBUSTER QUEUE THAT NETFLIX ONLY HAD ON DVD.
I stayed on with Netflix for $15.00 a month which got me streaming and two dvds. But I will not pay yet another 25% increase to these greedy bastards who treat their old customers like dirt.
From now on I'm with Blockbuster. I like my blu-rays. And not the constant price increases.

It went from about $10 to $16 for the same service... or put differently, two three-dollar bills. :)Here is their letter:
We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.
Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:
Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a monthYour price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.
These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.
You can easily change or cancel your unlimited streaming plan, unlimited DVD plan, or both, by going to the Plan Change page in Your Account.
We realize you have many choices for home entertainment, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to call us at 1-888-357-1516.

What did you do with all those "Save the Whale" signs?

I always wondered how they could sustain the $9.99 "streaming plus 1" plan.
The answer is simple - and we see this happen with all sorts of companies around (including trash removers) - start with low rates, get customer base, then jack up the rates. Once you let the hook set, pull hard.
So it is a 60% price hike... big deal... :( Sounds like Obama's budget.
