Definately an imperfect movie but affecting nontheless.

I thought the book was amazing; emotionally true and brilliantly paced.

it didn't immediately register with me that this was a 'different' world and reality than the present one where humans were harvested. I really saw no point in the film other than to get depressed.

That was my first reaction as well until I thought of it as a figurative representation of real world people. People working in sweat shops. migrant farm workers, slave laborors etc. The point being that we do already accept human carnage for the sake of convenience and cost effectiveness and those people do accpet their fate because they lack the basic knowledge and skills to rebel in any way.
