The definition and color balance is much better. Visually it is a treat, as facial expressions and other details of skin, clothing, objects and landscapes pop with detail. Voices have more heft, clarity and timbral nuance. Soundstage is more alive. Gunfire is fast and crisp, even with the tommy gun that previously sounded like static with poor attack and decay. Down to the River - each voice is clearly delineated with air and excellent separation. You can even hear a cowbell chime just before the car chase scene and purcussive strumming and washboard that in the lossy DD soundtrack were congested and practically unintelligible over the sound of the gunfire, yelling and car engine and tires on the country road.
Another must-have Blu-ray.

watching it through the first time...and that was because so much of it was filmed here.

cinematography. Ugh. Yellows and browns, as if the camera had been puked upon.
...much better than the one about the Jewish man - A Serious Man.
Guess you had to be one to appreciate it.

I am one and I did not appreciate it. I watched it with my sister and we both found it offensive and creepy.

I thought about renting Serious Man, what did you guys find offensive and creepy about it?
Musical retelling of Homer's Odyssey infused into a tale of salvation in the deep south. The cinematography is actually one of Roger Deakin's finest hours. Every frame looks like it could be in a museum. The sepia-like treatment was done in post-production but until you've seen it on Blu-ray, you ain't seen it right. The 1080p is indeed MUCH improved. It's not subtle.
As for Coens' worst--the award goes to A Serious Man, which sucked. Ladykillers, Hudsucker Proxy, Man Who Wasn't There, Blood Simple, Raising Arizona and Miller's Crossing were all significantly worse than O Brother.

I'll agree with you on O'Brother. Great film. The problem with comparing ANY Coen Bros. film is, at the end of the day, you are comparing apples and oranges, in that each is significantly different from the others. Ladykillers was mediocre, but the worst Coen Bros. film (which at least which bore their name) must be.....Intolerable Cruelty.
