I hate it when a supposed "great" film takes so much effort and preparation to really "take in." Yes, I rewatched Solaris a few weeks ago, mentally prepared and alone, but there was still a lot to be desired IMO.
Follow Ups:
What makes is so foreign to a typical American viewer is not the language, it is the focus on humans amidst the space technology and travel.
In a typical American sci-fi film (2001 being one such example), the technology is the subject. In Solaris the technology is nothing but just the background, the setting.
Therefore anyone coming to Solaris with an expectation of seeing another Star Dreck Tropper (sorry, can't remember the title properly), albeit somewhat better, will walk away grossly disappointed.
On the other hand, anyone attuned to say, Bergman, will take to Solaris like fish to water, never mind the space station and Visitors.
Solaris is not a Russian 2001... in fact the two films share almost nothing. Solaris is much more Wild Srawberries set in next century.

that men becomes subsumed to "technology." Not just subsumed, but all but defeated--- and then reborn in it.
The reason you love "Barry Lyndon," actually pretty mediocre in the Kubrick oeuvre, is that YOU take certain preconceived notions to it, just as you accuse semuta. Films as different as 2001, Clockwork, and FMJ purposefully show how modern "systems" have the power to dwarf humans and humanity. Of course, Kubrick also could "do" emotion and make actor-centered films while showing that. Paths of Glory, Lolita, and The Killing show that.
I don't recall accusing him of anything...
But you can have 2001, I have no need for it... one viewing is more than enough... two is one too many. Sorry, don't have a DVD to send you! :)

I have the Criterion edition of this movie on DVD and the picture quality is nothing but breathtaking! I don't know how they did it. It's ironic that it took American studio to remaster a Russian movie, while a lot of Russian movies get poor remastering jobs by the very studios that made them.
Anyhow. I loved Solaris ever since seeing it as a child. On the matter of Space Odyssey 2001, it's not on exact same subject - it's not talking about some grand scheme, while doing it in the abstract form. It is more literal and concentrates on the human nature, and on the main protagonist specifically. There was a poor US remake with Cloony.
On the Criterion DVD, someone said that Tarkovski saw Space Odyssey before shooting Solaris and he disliked all the attention to special affects, rather then the characters themselves. It didn't help that he was limited by the tight movie budget available to Soviet filmmakers. For example, Tarkovski didn't have enough color film to shoot with! So he had to resort to shooting specific scenes in black and white and the rest in color, resulting in a very atmospheric cinematic experience. When I saw Solaris, I instantly recalled Matrix, where scenes in the "Matrix" have green overtones, while scenes in the "real world" have natural color gamma.

Well, kudos to you for getting the ambience right. Curious as to where you found it lacking.
