Nearly loved it. Most won't because of its Scandinavian director giving us a Norse-like hero and his home grown dose of violence.
Gosling stands tall, straight, silent to the point of near autism. He is a rock that doesn't telegraph thoughts or emotions. He is much more than meets the eye and this walking onion peels slowly as the film progresses.
Violent? Not for Refn nor his fans. Not much more than the average part-and-parcel crime drama. For those who have seen it he got technical advice from Gasper Noe on the elevator stomping scene which was CUT in order to get a "R" rating! Refn is famous for the "Pusher" series which used a few gallons of red stuff getting their points across.
Carey (so cute you could put her on a cracker with cream cheese) Mulligan was not so cute this time out. Perhaps purposefully to show a more realistic side to a woman whose hubby is soon to be released from prison. She seems too "adoring" of Gosling (her next door neighbor) despite the apparent "sterility" of their relationship.
Finally, the delight of the film for me: Albert Brooks. There is not telling what he did to get this part. I'm sure he squealed with delight when he got the go ahead.....Albert is a really BAD guy an you BELIEVE him. No overt Jewish shtick, just a thinking man's small time mobster who is capable of anything.
Gosling's stolid character seems to effect the pacing but the action is there and the plot is solid and classic.
I got my money's worth.

but missed a real connection for me.
It got a bit dumb at the end as well Brooks was not that wily IMO.
too bad it could have been great.

their were few redeeming qualities displayed in the film at all. I see a film as a story not necessarily a "feeling" experience. Yeah, I got attached to Bambi but that was a while back. 8^ )

So I'll probably pass, despite liking Ryan Gosling.
I'm pretty sick and tired of 'violence as art'.

Brooks: he has but several short scenes. Seeing a calm guy resort to the most sadistic violence isn't unexpected anymore; it's become a trope. He reminded me of Dustin Hoffman in that film wherein he played a murderer--- not believable, at all.
Gosling and Mulligan: bad decision not to have them take a chance on love. Because it was left unexplained, the lack of a relationship just looked, well, like another attempt to create something interesting by doing the unexpected.
A very, very good film mining the same theme, but one that struck platinum, was Michael Mann's, "Thief," with James Caan, Tuesday Weld, James Belushi. You want scary? Robert Prosky shows how it's done: his "Let me be your friendly uncle" role truly is memorable.
Is it fair to compare the films? Yes, because to praise a piece of poop is to diminish not just those that have taken the effort, it allows crappy films to be made because those involved are NOT held to a higher standard.
Almost always when a foreign director comes to Hollywood, he comes a cropper. This film continues a sad tradition.
Enthusiastically agree on Prosky. Will see Drive soon.

with Scan Design coolness, elegance and spareness.
A few times Michael Mann came to mind but Refn has much better taste and has a very deft hand at keeping things taut.
I don't think it deserved the R rating BTW and yes it was great to see Albert Brooks as a C list gangster.
