Business as usual for the Coroner, who is about take a leave to meet-up with his daughter who is visiting from the U.S. - when he answers the last request for the autopsy on the mutilated body of a girl, found on the banks of the river...The things started developing from there.I had few problems with the movie, however the ending is as shocking as in any movie I've ever seen, and that alone warrants watching ti.

This was kind of like "Hollywood cookie-cutter" version of Korean revenge movies. Familiar elements, throw in some blood, get a couple of pretty famous Korean actors, finish the movie shoot, etc. Originality and that Korean spunky charm is what went missing..
They have a fascination with severed body parts being jumbled. I've seen this in two other films. I thought the plot development got a tad murky near the middle of the movie. There are better films from Korea.

"The Housemaid" was an excellent film of a slightly dim-witted girl acting as a servant in an upper class Korean mansion. The movie seemed complete until the end when a near horrific seen of revenge occurs to pay back the vile money vultures she sacrificed for.
One thing, they do it so damned well.
I'm not sure if you have seen the "revenge" trilogy but you should.

jinx psychological warfare and continual border skirmishes?
In VN what few ROKs I was ever around made me nervous. They looked wound up like human Dobermans.

with Koreans, supplied Korean ships. The situation with the North is always on their mind. How you got politics from my prior comments is slightly amazing. You think national character is some genetic trait? Anyhow, Japanese films have their fair share of violence, retribution, too. Come to think of it, how about the American torture genre that so absorbs you?

sum small to respect your personal situation. I worked for Southern Marine Ship Supply in Savannah for five years. Minshul Shin was one of our two Korean sales guys, can't recall the other guy. It was in the early eighties. C'mon, put up or shut up. The owner still is a friend, he sold it several years ago. He's a stand up guy running a different company in Savannah. Did I say, "put up?"
I'll check it out - saw Housemaid, freaky ending, almost funny.

I appreciated a few David Lynch moments in Mr Vengeance and Old Boy was most amusing.

superb, but OB was the crowning achievement.
may have seemed stimulating but LV was far more creative and laced with dark humor all the way. Far more intelligent and visually appealing, LV smokes the back alley appeal of OB.

rushes to every Hollywood piece of tripe (and finds something wonderful in it) and who finds breathless worth in the goriest of teen slash/torture epics, what could?
Old Boy, of course, features a spectacular performance by one of Korea's finest actors, a nemesis played by another fine one, and an unspeakable crime that eludes even the most careful viewer's solution. Yes, it does have two memorable fight scenes: they elevate that venerable action film standard to heights never before attained. The fight in the hall, all in one unedited take, is justly renowned among serious film goers. Now, that isn't to say the other two films aren't good. They are, in fact, excellent. But Old Boy is the crowning achievement.
