Should you want to read them...if you haven't already.

'Harp of Burma' was originally a series of children's stories.

Both these books are very much worth searching out and if I may I would also like to mention 'Nanjing Requiem' by Ha Jin...but be prepared for an emotional wringer.

BTW, there are many other excellent Japanese humanist genre films out there, 'Sansho the Bailiff' is one you might want to check out if you have not already.

"After Life" (in Japanese, the title more accurately is "Wonderful Life") is my favorite, though the others are exceptional, also.
