I don't use the term masterpiece lightly, but this is Scorsese's best film in 15 years. The most amazing thing about it is how personal Scorsese makes it for himself as well as the viewer. At least it was easy to make that personal connection for me. Hugo is partially an ode to filmmaking as an art form, and while other directors would have handled this material ostentatiously, Scorsese juggles the plot, the effects, the "filmmaking about filmmaking" elements and the child direction in a fresh way that makes it look effortless and unpretentious. Very well done. In fact, I can't imagine how it could have been done better. Most filmmakers would have failed with this story.

but overall a fairly ordinary experience and sometimes boring for me.

I did not get the whole "dog in the lap effect" critics touted either.

with the archivist all about? Booooring. And Kingsley was miscast. From despicable to kind just isn't in his repertoire. Sasha? Horrible character. Ridiculous.
The whole thing was a conceit for Scorcese to "instruct" us about early film. As such, it even sucked on that level. It was about FX, not real film. If I saw that friggin' shell hit the moon one more time......
You're partly right: I did wish for the automoton to come to life. As it is, it was the only interesting character.
Maybe the 3D got in the way for you. I saw a 2D showing. You seriously must have an empty heart if this film didn't move you or you couldn't appreciate the theme of fixing things and lives that are broken. It worked on so many levels.

Not sure I would call it a masterpiece but it is a really lovely little film with a great deal of complexity and nuance.
for him to tackle. The reviews are glowing and I will surely see it.
