WOW! Two and a half hours of the story. Characters developed, story expanded, plot rendered in-depth. This film overwhelms with all the details and the relationships not revealed in the Swedish film.
Rooney Mara convincingly disappeared into her character and Craig was just under the Bond line. All the cast members excellent with kudos to Plummer and Skarsgard.
After the Swedish version (saw it twice) I wondered what was all this Salander business was about....this movie makes it abundantly clear with more graphic details too boot.
I appreciate both films but if I had to choose it would be this one.
Follow Ups:
...I read all three books and saw all three of the Swedish films.
This one is far superior to the original film and follows the book more closely.
A big budget, high quality writing, great cinematography and excellent actors/performances make a real difference.
Before seeing it, I thought it would be too long at almost 3hrs. But the time went by quickly.
My wife and I had streamed all 3 Swedish Dragon movies and she has read all 3 books. She felt that the US movie was closer to the book. We both agreed that Mara was a better Lisbeth. The US movie provided more insight into Lisbeth's character and provided better reasons for her to be a sympathetic character. US movie was less sympathetic towards Blomquist however, which I felt was truer to the story.
One thing the US movie did not due was to provide more time to explain Lisbeth's bond with her previous guardian. However more time was given to the depravity of her new guardian which I felt to be unnecessary. In these areas the Swedish version was better.
Looting of the money did not require so much film time. A few computer key strokes and images of Lisbeth in a banker's office would have been sufficient and cut the sequence by 75%.
US version stands up very well to the Swedish, and in some ways is superior. Mara will receive awards and justifiably so.
Best, Ross

The "Hollywood" version certainly had more "pizzazz" but I thought the Swedish version was a bit more realistic. There are some slight differences in the plot so I may wind up reading the book to figure out which is "truer" to the original story.
Be seeing this on Monday. I'm not expecting it will be better than the original, however. Remakes seldom, if ever, are. Originality doesn't yell, it screams.

The bigger production more $ and 'stars' not necessary will make better picture.

reason: some guys think America! Bigger is better! More stunts! More glitz! More recognizable stars! A hunk for the lead male! A babe for the female!
By making both leads Hollywood-attractive, the edginess of the original is lost: and that was its main quality! This film is as much about style as it is story. Glossy has destroyed it.
It seemed as tho Mara did an imitation of Rapace's portrayal. A good one, but an imitation nonetheless, lacking gavitas. My son, who saw it with me, didn't see the original, and loved Mara's job.
As for the movie itself, it was a draw, IMHO, up until the ending. Hell, IIRC, it was basically the same movie. The poingant ending in the Sweedish version was much better than the Hollywood version. Plus,
SPOILER-------------
Way too much time devoted to the looting of Wenrstrom's money in this incarnation. 10 minutes vs. 20 seconds. With no more impact.
Sweedish version, **1/2
Hollywood, **
The Girl Who Played with Fire, the best of the bunch.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
The story was expanded and, I guess, more like the book. At least I now know that Lisbeth was a squeeze with feelings. Also, that Martin was a psycho not just a rapist. The whole thing made more sense.
I do see your case for Mara's imitation but she did it BETTER. She projected COLD instead than Rapace's FIRE and she is easier to look at.
Going with 3.5 outta 5.

Mara showed more vulnerability and the relationship including her devastation at the end which essentially drives the next two books. Also, I liked the extended sequence about the money looting at the end and was angry that that was given nothing in the Swedish movie.
AKAIC, the treatment in the 30 seconds of airtime dealing with the looting in the original was as effective as the 5 or 10 minutes devoted to it in the already long remake.
I thought the emotional impact of Vanger seeing Harriet, fetched from down under in the original, far surpassed the impact, such as it was, in the remake.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
She had better cans.
My stars are out of 4 so we're not far apart in the star dept. The end of the movie gave Sweeden the edge over Hollywood.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
I will give it a spin when it is on free stream list.

Why Mr. Torture, anyway? Did you confuse me with Grits? I may be Mr.ManyThings, but torture? :)If you mean Cold Fish, I only watched it for boobs!

But I strongly recommend Cold Fish to anyone planning on getting rid of a body - this is perhaps the best legally available manual on dismemberment, step by step, with plenty of high quality color images, and verbal explanations.
All in HD, no less.

Films splash is the first thing you see when the film starts. Very funny.
Unfortunately, I found this a rather tedious and repetitious film to sit through. You see one dismemberment, you seen them all. It was necessary to go back there three times.
I've become quite acclimated to the ick and gore so that wasn't a shocker but how they got two hours out of this "true story" is beyond me.
The part I liked the most is where he grew some balls and went home and whupped up on his family.
The Japanese seem to have a serious cinematographer shortage.

Rooney Mara is an upgrade as well, the rest were servicable.
I just like the story and am happy there is a new version to see and (unfortunetly) wait for.
It was a quick pass but some sharpie may have picked it up.

Looking forward to seeing the movie ... but it's going to be hard act to follow ... Swedish actress Noomi Rapace was outstanding playing the part of Lisbeth Salander.

for this role. The Swedish version was very much made-for-tv in pace and feel. I am interested to see if Fincher's version gives it a movie feel.

less than 5' tall and tiny. Plus, she wasn't anyone who was going to just mess with you unless you did something to her. The worse thing was having her hack your computer. As to the actress, I thought that Lisbeth was an inconsistent character, sometimes Asperger's--like and sometimes not. I never got the feeling that Lisbeth was ever dangerous with Rapace.
I liked her in the part ... as far as hype ... I knew nothing about the foreign movie trilogy when I rented it ... so that was not a factor when I watched the film. I thought her performance was quite good.

...have it in their top 10 films of the year list.
Plan to see it this weekend.
I'm pretty sure it was important to persons behind the scene to have a new face as the girl. I respect that from the git. As much as I'm sure there were established actresses who would love to have been cast, it would hsve been a distraction. So far, so good. Plan to see it ASAP.
...the new Sherlock Holmes movie if I'm not mistaken.

...you're right.
Hard to keep the two Dragon Tat girls straight.
...that this one is even better than the Swedish version.
WELL DONE!
