One of the greatest films of Sidney Lumet's and Henry Fonda's careers is coming to Blu-ray soon. Happily this will be a Criterion transfer, so I bet it will be like seeing this film for the first time. I've previously only seen broadcasts on NTSC TVs at 1.33:1. The Criterion is near the original aspect ratio of the film (1.85:1), although the Blu-ray will be at 1.67:1--I assume to "fit" on today's TVs. Still much better than the chopped versions on TV.Amazon actually has slashed the price nearly in half through Dec 31 (link below).

Yeah, either that or you detest Americans and have a fetish for communists.

You should know better than watching that scum's films.
He is scum in his professional life... in his political one... and in his personal.

He feels obligated to make such gestures from time to time, but his ass licking is constant, make no mistake about it. He is following in the footsteps of his father. The film does nothing to condemn the communism - it is more about a bad guy, than anything.

When I saw it forty some years ago behind the Iron Curtain, I was impressed.
Seeing it here, years later, nearly made me laugh at my former naivete - was I was possibly watching a totally different film? No, it was the same one... but so contrived, so artificial and just plain silly...

Not dated. just good.

It's dated for sure, but maybe your first impression counts for something?

I was young, just married, and my wife loved Fonda! :)

'The Killing of a Chinese Bookie' and 'Repulsion'.

I concede that, but it is the most realistic portrayal of local mob guys that I've ever seen on film. I thought Ben Gazzara was fantastic, although it was easy to stand out in an otherwise mediocre cast.
