maybe it's a French year. Hugo was just a plain out bore.

They only go to "films".
Hugo was a wonderful movie -- about films!
P.A.
...interesting, touching family film.
I thought the 3D was really put to good use.
Worth seeing but it'll never win the Oscar.

I've seen pots of water brought to a boil with more excitement than Age of Innocence.

novel and it is interesting on many levels--- as good a view into a past generatiion's mores as you will see. It is as poignant a love story as "Jane Eyre" or "Wuthering Heights" and is captured by a director still at the height of his powers. Daniel Day-Lewis is terrific. Winona Ryder showed she once had great skills. Michelle Pfeiffer, also, is dazzlingly beautiful and shows her range, playing a role diametrically opposed to her star turn in, "Scarface," as a coke-headed moll.
I can't think of other costume dramas its equal, in the past decades, with the sole exceptions of "Barry Lyndon," and "Liasons Dangereuse."
"Age" is lustrous, brilliant filmmaking.
All the insight into "a past generation's mores" in Age of Innocence could be gleaned in the first five minutes. After that, it was a complete snoozefest. Wharton was no Dickens. She was more of a garden designer and interior decorator who wrote stories. Like I said, I'd rather watch water boil. A waste of Scorsese's talent and set design on the likes of Ryder and Pfeiffer, who never had great skills but ended up with great directors in a couple films.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If Hugo doesn't move you, maybe you just lack a soul.

Many great comedies have gone totally unrecognized by the Oscars through the years. Many have won in the comedy category for the Golden Globes, then failed to get even an Oscar nomination.
Only in recent years have Sci-Fi/ Fantasy film been considered (Lord of the Rings). To many, Star Wars was the best picture in 1977. It certainly merited a screenplay nomination, however it was only considered for technical awards (and won for Editing, Art Direction, Costume Design, Sound, Score, Visual Effects and received a special achievement award for Sound Effects).
To my surprise, I really enjoyed "Bridesmaids" as well.
I was surprised "Ides of March" was snubbed. I would have considered it over "Moneyball," though I thought Jonah Hill was very good.

...just watched the film last night.
Viola and Octavia were very good.
I suspect they remind you of people around you growing up.
Film was just ok, though.
The Help should get best movie. The only other category I give a damn about is best supporting actress and that's because of the job Jessica Chastain did in The Help. She stole ever scene she was in and lit up the screen. It'll be a travesty if the little statue doesn't land in her hands.Twas an off year.

cares?
Caprio as J. Edgar? C'mon. Was Mark Wahlberg busy?
Streep as Thatcher? And Julia Child? How about combining the two? Sometimes, you can't play all those juicy roles. Anyhow, the Thatcher film has no barbs, it's impotent. No fire.
Clooney's a good actor, but certainly not Oscar stuff.
They should give the female one to Rooney, though she's basically mimicking another actress's performance.
The rest of the statues they should put in a closet until next year.
Pathetic.

i think they going to give it to HUgo, Jean Djurand and Viola Davis

It was a small scale, but ambitious movie. I was very excited after seeing it, thinking that I had seen a great little movie. Jessica Chastain was sensation, not to mention, so was the young girl who played the daughter. The Academy's voting members definitely vote to the beat of a different drummer.
together in NC. Potent duo.
...Artist, Clooney and Streep.
That's what makes this such an interesting year - no clear front runners.
