I have reset all my Oscar measures after seeing this masterpiece of film and story telling made possible by Streep and a host of English actors playing to perfection.
The beauty of the the story is that it plays from the "end" not the beginning. We meet a Maggie who is quite addled and living a twighlight reality between her beloved Dennis (Broadbent) and her political life. This is where Streep knocks it out of the park with the stylings of an aged Alzheimer's sufferer who rambles and shuffles then releases laser-like bursts of sense and determination to those around her. This is the home base for the flashbacks that tell the highlights of her story.
Streep's elderly Maggie is her strongest point while the supporting cast covers the other bases of her younger political life. Even though Thatcher quickly became a polarizing figure in the UK the film cleverly minimizes this and sticks to the story of the real Maggie...the human being. For this, I loved the screenplay and direction as it softened the harsh memories and reminded us that all are human in the end.
Don't miss it.
Follow Ups:
My date is currently dealing with her mother slipping into an alzheimer's nightmare. We were both surprised by the personal aspects of the story and overwhelmed by the performance of Meryl Streep.
Baba-Booey to you all!
in the UK.
The Tories have declared the movie "intrusive and too personal" which shows the endearment they feel for Maggie. BAFTA's all around.

tantamount to making a film of Ronald Reagan and leaving out the politics, too. The life of a second-rate actor. Fascinating!
This film has disappeared from sight and has been panned in England for one good reason: it has no balls.
At least Thatcher had some; she deserved better.
Re-read and try again.
