I'm not a fan of most VN war movies, including Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket or We Were Soldiers. But Deer Hunter is one I really admire because it shows how the war affected three friends from a small steel mill town. The movie was not designed to be a war movie. The violence took place only in act II, of course, when the characters found themselves thrust into the war and captured by the VC. Most of the film focuses on their relationships before and after, in act I and III.
I also find DH interesting in that the three friends are Russian immigrants who go off to fight a communist foe. The themes of "just one shot" and the complex relationship that develops between Streep's and De Niro's characters are pulled off flawlessly.

It's been many years since I watched it, but from my memory, they are US-born kids, not immigrants. From the town with large Russian immigrant population, though.
