then much of the art world's output in this medium is a failure. But the scope must be wider: must all music be so? Painting? Certainly, Expressionism is not fun to look at: much of it is horrendous, upsetting. And what of architecture? The haunting Holocaust Museum by David Liebeskind, in Germany, is that non-artistic because of its jarring, jagged, upsetting form?
To those that restrict their film viewing to escapist or "fun" vehicles, I'd argue they're missing the greatest this medium has to offer. It is work to "get it", certainly, just as much of 20/21st century music is difficult to appreciate without concerted effort.

I avoid the summer blockbuster action films because I know I will, I don't know, not be entertained. The quick edits, the short dialogue, there's nothing for you to do, nothing to really look at or to think about.
Daniel Libeskind's Holocaust Museum is entertaining because it mimics a sculpture, or a painting, or a movie. Looks like a fun house to me.
If that's your definition of fun, don't invite us over for drinks!

Yes, Liebeskind indeed said he made the museum to be that, and more. What would you expect in a place meant to recall and invoke the cold-blooded and purposefully engineered slaughter of millions upon millions of human beings?

Eye of the beholder. No accounting for taste. No definition of taste.
'Interesting' has a more complex relationship with a person than merely being 'entertaining.'
Entertaining is a sub-grouping of interesting, for me.
...that, depending on your mood, you'll enjoy watching a film for its' entertainment value but you probably forget this when you're on a 'Tarr' run.
and love his work, because it's original, haunting, and manages through an emotional means to convey deep psychological and metaphysical (!) thoughts.
