John Worriker (Bill Nighy) is a life-long MI-5 intelligence analyst who served as the right hand of his boss and best friend (Gambon). One morning Gambon lays an intelligence report on Nighy and Judy Davis for the express purpose of discussing the possible fallout of the UK's PM withholding American intelligence from the government causing loss of Brit life. Gambon conveniently dies with this information in play and now Nighy is left to sort things out and defend himself against the PM (Ralph Finnes) and Davis, his MI-5 rival. The whole affair grow out of scale and draws in Nighy's neighbor Rachael Weisz who aids his attempt to sort out the moral dilemmas of doing right vs. preserving one's strongest ally.
This is one of the more intelligent, quick, and sophisticated scripts I seen in both television and film. It moves quickly with each character progressing the plot with every exchange. As the trailer shows, this is a top flight cast for any theatrical production and orbits the earth high above TV Guide fare. Too bad there is no Worriker reprise but this one story it is.
Follow Ups:
... really top class TV. The Beeb have so much past experience.
Bill Nighy has become a favorite and was also great in "State Of Play".

I saw the BBC version first--it was SO much better than the American movie version. Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald were terrific.

"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
place for serious film lovers. If it ain't there, it probably ain't available anywhere. I just wish they'd invest more in newer "art house" films...
Cool.
Loved it when he streaked on the quad and wife and her girlfriends picked him up, "Little chilly out tonight eh?". "Wanna go to KFC?"

"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
it's all I do. The docs and series keep me busier than the movies.
