What are your top ten Westerns, and why?
~~~Our lunacies have been infringed..
Follow Ups:
Not sure I've seen 10 westerns in my entire life, not a big western fan, but I have seen just about every Clint movie made (except his romance one), so here goes:
-Good, bad, ugly
-Unforgiven
-Fistful of dollars
-Hang'em high
-Outlaw Josie Wales
-Blazing Saddles
-Cowboys and Aliens (saw this fairly recently, fun movie)
-Pale Rider
-High Plains Drifter
Best chick I have seen in a Western
Anyone have his stuff on a Top Ten List?
So many dumb people with smart phones...
Don't see him in the top ten. The Tall T was pretty good.
Once Upon a Time in the WestNot the greatest western but one of my favorites.
More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better.
My vote for favorite character in western - Ian McShane as Deadwood's Swearengen.
More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better.
In real life the Gem was pulling in over 250 ounces of gold coin a night!
if you see it you'll know why.
If you do a search here you'll find many good lists of
MANY GREAT Westerns, all worthy of your time and
effort.
I doubt many new Westerns will be added to those lists in
the next 10, 20 or 100 years.
So many dumb people with smart phones...
Had to be Wayne's best!
...The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford ?
I really liked this one.
Both Brad Pitt & Casey Affleck are excellent, IMHO.
Also, Jarmush's Dead Man & Ed Harris' Appaloosa.
If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is: infinite.
Their families told them we´d rape them.
Well we might. In my opinion, though, you might have given us the benefit of the doubt.~ Chris Adams
And John Wayne certainly will not be anywhere in this list - he couldn't
act.
The Wild Bunch
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
The Proposition
Missouri Breaks - Brando AND Nicholson!
Little Big Man
Good Bad Ugly - best of that trilogy
Butch and Sundance
Silverado - yes, I know, it gets a bit silly at times, but it's still
pretty good
A Big Hand for the Little Lady - a great scam well pulled off
Westerns are not about acting.
Damn Mused over this myself--dropped it for Rio Bravo-not as intellectual as Big G
Love the Music though
Des
to define a transitory period in our history through brilliant characterizations, an multi-faceted plot that made sense.
Yes, the music was fantastic, but also cinematography and editing.
Rio B couldn't overcome the tired plot, poor actors horribly miscast (Nelson and Martin, gunslingers???). Clichés overcame the entire project.
Possibly as I saw TBC as a lad and it was a thinking mans Western-I failed to graspit's "entertainment" value-however the Grandeur/Music and Scale of the production was
inspiring-you were right I should've included it over RB-guess I was more easily swayed
by the played up "bravado" and sympathy acting by Wayne the boozer and the pretty
boy. The Shoot scene with Dean in the Saloon was classic though. As escapism and cliches go it ranks high.
Also by the way--how did Charlton Heston jump into his pants in one go-ha!
best, if not the best, fight ever filmed. And let's not forget how great Chuck Connors was as the slimy gunslinger.
Yes indeed Rifleman was and excellent "baddie" The fight scene is scant in my memory--
The best one I recall was Connery and Harris in the Molly MaGuires.
In no particular order:
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Silverado
Unforgiven
Butch and the Kid
The Proposition
Blazing Saddles
Dances With Wolves
The Wild Bunch
Little Big Man
and,
the greatest of them all, the HBO series,
Deadwood
Why? Just liked these better than the ones I left off, lol. Some I left off that could qualify on another day might be Shane, Nevaduh Smith, and Cat Ballou off the top of my head. FTR, I'm not a fan of early (pre 60s) westerns.
