... This 2010 Spanish film is so much different from the escapist and questioning world of "Prometheus", and might be an ideal aperitif for some - absent of ANY false notes performance wise and an example of how galactic a soul's searching inner space really is."Biutiful" is knee deep in human pathos - saturated really in the trenches of quiet desperation, and day to day survival, and underscores profound opening to the greater potentials that life may allow one.
Set in Barcelona Spain, it follows the life of a man whose efforts to support his two children and wife, (and those illegals who benefit from his arrangements with the police in order to work), is destined to be brief.
Javier Bardem is so refreshingly honest in his portrayals that harken the true naturalist school of film acting that I feel transported back to the '70's, and couldn't help imagining "what if".
"What if" Bardem were cast as "Joe Buck" in "Midnight Cowboy" for instance. Even that great film's tone would benefit.
"Biutiful" is palate cleanser, devoid of any styling that might upset purist film watchers. This one needs time to savor, it is a foreign feast so it's best to let it take you along.

A very effective film, one that never would have left Spain under the Franco regime
(Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead!) if it even managed to get made then.NOT a pretty portrait of Barcelona or life there (the life we're not meant to see, that exists everywhere), but not totally devoid
of the little touches of life that can be pretty, even fleetingly beautiful. But man, SO much heartbreak in that film...
Bardem is such a gem!!

could have ever fallen for his "wife". It was a continuous helping of cognitive dissonance for me.

I know what you mean.
When the photo of them as young and in love showed up I could better understand - libido knows no limits for the young.
She was still pretty "freaky", after two children.
As the Adam Ant song goes: "...subtle innuendo follows, it MUST be something inside...".
