Have a job opportunity. What I've seen crime is bad and houses are (still) expensive...I know my mother in-law (Oregon) and my brother (Las Vegas) would love us to move out of Mississippi.

Alright, it is not New Mexico HOT, but pretty damn hot nonetheless.
(I lived in Socorro, NM, for a couple of years, and THAT was one hot place to live. Over 105 degrees for 12 straight days one summer! So hot the tar was leaching out of the pavement, so you left black footprints on the sidewalk after crossing the street! Yikes! Never again!)
Back to Sac. There are a couple of good points about Sac. They have a couple of good restaurants, if you like good food, (not fine dining, but good food with a decent atmosphere). Specifically the Streets of London is a really good English type pub, (with a great burger and good English beer on tap), and Chicago Fire is a good deep dish pizza place, with a fun party atmosphere, (and a lot of decent looking ladies in there, which is always a plus in my book!) ;-)
As far as music (shopping) is concerned, there are a couple of decent vinyl stores, including Dimple Records, (mostly new, with a bit of used), The Beat (new and used), and Esoteric Records, (for used only).
Crime is pretty high, but if you can afford to live out of town, (assuming the horrible commute doesn't affect you), then there are some decent places to live, especially if you can afford to go closer to the mountains.
My two cents worth anyway.
beer, coffee, free range meats, and great wine.
Oh, the produce is the best in the country and the wild mushrooming is world-class, too.
Skiing, hiking, and surfing are all possible... on the same day.

...is better than the South.
You get 300 days of sunshine, no bugs and very little humidity.
Sacramento does get hot in the summer.
And it's more expensive.
Sacramento is ok, could better and could be worse.
Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Monterey, the wine country, Big Sur, Yosemite are all faily close.
...I'll pass,

Not the best way to make decisions, amigo.
Any place can be heaven or hell.

Besides that, unrealistic move...for now.

Much better than Bakersfield or Fresno. That's a pretty low bar.

Make sure you do your pricing homework.
CA is EXPENSIVE $$$
Everything is more expensive: housing, taxes, food, utilities, gas, electricity, fines, parking tickets, etc.
My wife is currently in Wisconsin and is reporting gasoline 1$/gal cheaper than here in CA.
When I go back to WI, I can buy dinner for 6 for less than the price of 2 our here.
Do your homework and if you decide to move to CA, make sure you salary delta is sufficient.
I thought the still business was going gang busters?

I'm just funnin' ya. Don't do it or you'll kill yourself.
All the above are accurate points - the only thing I might add is that Sacramento is located in a valley (Big Valley) at the confluence of two major rivers.
Summer - hot - 100+ for days and some humidity, not as high as Mississippi
Winter - nights can get cold - but not much below freezing -
California has its challenges - Government/schools/power and water...
But all in all - a beautiful state with lots to explore -
I'm headed up to the high sierras for some camping with my daughter and friends in a few weeks - and very much looking forward to it.
With the recent "correction" in the markets - the home prices will be high, but not as high as they were Q2 2008 before the fall...you might even get lucky - there are deals to be had...
Good luck
I have an employee who lives there and he's happy.
There is reasonably good vinyl to be had.
Only fair-ish for restaurants, but they have a Whole Foods, Corti Brothers, etc. for a decent grocery store array.
It's an easy pop in to SF - about an hour.
Rumor has it, they are thinking of getting an NBA quality team there soon.
The A's and Giants are easy to get to, and the town has a killer fun AAA baseball 'experience.'
Old Town blows dog dick, think of "old sac" as an old sack.
About 90 minutes to Squaw valley, couple hours to the shore at Tahoe.
If you have kids, UC Davis is close, and in state tuition is about half what out of state would be.
All in all, the best thing about Sacramento is that its easy to go someplace else.
Prices may be higher than Mississippi, but still a good time to hop into a home there.
Depending on what part of town you'd be working in, there are some OK water accessible areas to live in at Folsom Lake.

Not a big fan of Sacramento. It's colder at night and hotter in the day than here in the bay area.

There are some nice inland pockets of democrat influence: Tahoe, the college towns, etc.
Check the map - all the socialist subsidized farmer conservatives vote red. Pretty damn funny. Take the government subsidy then claim to hate "social programs."

I've spent little time there and didn't enjoy that.
Just remember: it's the seat of the California State government.
That alone should be enough of a deterrent to avoid Sacramento!

HOT. Some scenes in The Mentalist TV show are shot in Sac.
Housing may be expensive, but not like the Bay Area.
Must be some outlying towns to commute from.
I live in Oakland, which has a terrible rep for crime, but I love it here.
Every city has many areas in which to live. Come out here, look things over.
Toto, we're not in Mississippi anymore!
Crime isnt any worse than any other town of that size. There are good and bad parts of town. More crime in the bad parts, of course.
because of costs and still has to send his kids to private schools. I'd imagine "in town" housing prices are scary high (compared to the south) based on what he paid for his house.
Downtown and Old Town are nice but my perspective is really from a "tourists" point of view. I doubt if crime is higher than larger cities in Missipissippi, Louisiana and Alabama, but agin I'd defer to a native.
