I am going to give you the lazy man's answer and say that this review more than any other I read echoes my impressions of the movie.

I did not find the characters to be stereotypical at all. I found them to be very raw and organic, much like the settings and the action. This movie was the absolute opposite of slick and stilted. So much so that it in effect calls out current trends and styles in blockbuster movies these days as the tired cliches that they are. As to the character's dysfunctionality...well yeah to the degree that it can be found in that time and that place. Anything else would be contrived IMO.

...I found it fairly depressing that there are people living in squalor like that in our country today.
I have spent a little bit of time amongst some of the local folks in that area. I think one of the things that comes to light is that one person's squalor is another person's paradise. I don't think the people there in the movie or in real life are any less or any more happy than other peoples from all over the world including our own communities.
That is part of the artistry of this movie. It doesn't dress up the reality of the world it depicts to make it more palatable. It skillfully reveals it's true beauty and wonder sans tricks or misrepresentations
"worked!"
I doubt very much you spent very much time among any poor people.
You really are just an asshole. Your shit has grown old. So I say with all due respect, just fuck off.....
