I'm still resonating from the first third of this film--the best third.
This is an assembly of some of the finest characters in film playing their hearts out to save our six fugitives who escaped the embassy attack. Affleck played a CIA operative with a specialty for extricating folks out of harms way. He pretty much gets in over his head and has to wrestle with the CIA, Carter's West Wing, and six highly reluctant embassy employees.
The first third gives you the tension and angst of what being in that situation must have been like. The second third shows the angst of the escapees and is filled with some manufactured drama. The last third lays on the manufactured drama which I felt was a bit heavy-handed. Affleck directed so I guess that's his call.
Kudos to Arkin and Goodman for their comedic spice and to Malcolm's Dad (Cranston) for being the adamant CIA OPS Chief responsible for a really bad idea.
The timing for this couldn't be better as it sparks a sort of soul-searching that needs to be done about who and what we are.
Despite some of the drama this seems to have that Oscar stink about it. And, thanks Canada, for being brave enough to hide six people others refused to help.
Follow Ups:
as demonstrated proudly in the pictures over the closing credits, showing real scenes from the events against the movie scenes. Really well done.
Strong characters throughout. Indeed there are a few too many ultra-close calls that seem purely for cinematic effect, but even so, the result was as intended as there was strong tension.
I thought this was really great, much better than The Town, which was OK, but this shows BA has more to him than Boston local stories. I wonder if this has opened yet in Teheran? I assume it will face a very mixed reaction there.
...a FINE actor, and, apparently, a good director, too.
All other actors, too, were very good.

went action. I think he's trying to buck it now but that maybe his niche.

Really? Revolutionary guards and cops chasing down the taking off 747, really? Seems to me there was enough real drama in the story that maybe more talented screenwriters/director could have brought the story more effectively to the screen. Still, an entertaining movie, *** out of ****.

Oh no.....
first two believable.
Imagine the terror of being a civilian with thousands of people trying to break into your building. Oh, that happens nearly everyday in our modern Foreign Service.
