couldn't save it.
Absolutely disappointing.
Heck, even the usually pulse-pounding opening scene was trite.

Normally the stakes are a bit higher -- Bond is out to save the world. This time, some maladjusted psycho has issues with M? Please!
Some of the photography was very nice, but the action scenes somehow lacked drama.
This was a real snooze and a real failure as a movie. I'm amazed this script got the green light.
Can't believe how awful this was. Long and stupid. Plot was absolutely ridiculous.
How many explosions can you have in one movie? I thought this was the new 'we're going to be more realistic' James Bond?
I liked the first two, but this competes with 'Prometheus' for the 'most stupid movie of the year' title.

...the scene where Bond is tied up and Bardem first walks in the room with him is mesmerizing - Bardem is brilliant and owns every scene he's in.I say Best Supporting Actor nominee.
As for the film, I would put it below Casino Royale (Craig's best) but way above Solace.
My favorites are Russia with Love and Goldfinger - the Aston Martin was a nice touch in this one about the past and future, reminding me of the theme from No Country for Old Men.
Edit - Just read the latest Rolling Stone which rates the 24 Bond films - they put it at #5. Can't disagree with that.

I actually paid money to see it in the theatre and felt I got my (Matinee) money's worth.
I don't know if people actually remember all those old Bond movies well. Not exactly literary masterpieces, and those old Bond's hardly had any real character development..
Some youthful critics are saying top 5 or top 3 Bond films of all time. One said it was his pick for best ever Bond film (perhaps his strategy to get people to notice him). I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect these barely post-pubescent critics have very limited exposure and appreciation of the Sean connery films.
I have limited tolerance for the fast cut modern direction style seen in "Quantum."

A pox on his family and 100 years of bad luck for the inventor of "Intelligent Touchpads" for laptops!!!
SPOILER:
NO interesting or innovative chases. The opening sequence quite possibly is the worst, ever.
No romance. No sex. None. Is this a film for young teens?
Lots of cutesie, no real drama.
Bardem? Compare this "fearsome" guy to the character in the Coen film. This guy was a joke.
His impenetrable lair? Looked like a leftover from that collapsing city in "Inception."
This was a return to the weak Roger Moore 007.
It didn't even look expensive.
A "D," at best.
The opening sequence was disappointing compared to the first Craig film. The plot almost bordered on the unbelievable with Bardem being a swishy villain who is also one of the world's top computer hackers.
The payoff in this installment is the final segment where the more things change the more they stay the same. It's hard to wait over two hours for the "money shot" but it is a warm, comforting thrill of sorts.
Attendance is mandatory so go ahead and take your donut cushion with you.
PS. Movie makers, give Istanbul and the Grand Bazaar a rest already.

softer, nicer guy emasculates the first two films careful crafting of him as a brutal killing machine.
And I'd disagree strongly w/your view of the end: trite as hell and enough w/the fake FX. It's hard to believe they can afford to have a second-unit in Malaysia (or wherever it was) and Macau and not find a REAL Scottish castle on the moors?
It was very poorly written, both as action and as drama, and Albert Finney: what the fuck????
Who cared about him? No relationship was pre-developed, at all.
How about the waste of Fiennes?
And Bardem was just silly, not scary at all.
Let's face it: execrable writing AND pathetic direction.
Sam Mendes is NOT an action director.
Or much of one, at all.
