The one-two punch of Amores Perros and 21 Grams are in my opinion the best 'first two full length films' by any director ever. And the Tarrantino time-jump thing (if this had been done before Pulp Fiction, please correct me), worked even better in 21 Grams than it did in Pulp Fiction... my brain put that movie back together in perfect order after watching it. Big kudos to Gael Garcia Bernal and Benicio Del Toro in what was maybe the most wonderful performance I have ever seen.

Poor Tark with his Ivan and Rublev is turning in his grave. OK, OK, so you want to count the Steamroller... still a killer pair.Kinda agree with tin... Grams is a grossly over-rated flick, and Amores is OK, but would have been whole lot better without Bernal... that guy is positively getting onto my nerve! Find someone else already! :)
Just curious - what other directors did you compare him to?

seemed way over the top melodramatic, i.e. scenes contrived for maximum emotion, repeatedly.
I still liked it quite a bit, but it was a tad too set which made injured its hard-sought verisimilitude.
