If you ever wondered what ever happened to a lot of the character actors from the 60s and 70s who seem to have disappeared into the sunset, you're in luck as many of them pop up in bit roles in Django Unchained. Very strong performances by everyone concerned, even the old goats. If you're the type of person who is not put off by gratuitous violence and Tanantino's apparent fondness for certain words in the English language that begin with consonants you will most likely be highly entertained.
Follow Ups:
I'm not usually one to moan over blood and violence in movies, IF they serve the story. Tarantino just seems to revel in it, a LOT of it, for blood's sake IMO. The movie also could have used 30-40 minutes more on the cutting room floor.I did enjoy the performance by Christoph Waltz.

Gonna be rerun 10:00am CST Saturday morning. Tarrantino looks to be about the easiest interview in Hollywood. The man loves his craft and loves talking about it.

...depiction of the antebellum South ever?
Tarantino's goal was to depict the slaves and cowboys as they really were two years before the Civil War as no other cowboy film ever has.
He did a very entertaining, gritty and masterful job of it.
Highly recommended.
A Tarrantino masterpiece of adolescent pranks. Spike Lee said no way he'd see it and he may be right. If anything Tarrantino must be one of the shrewdest talkers on the planet to get this movie cast. What really surprised me was Sam L Jackson's blistering performance of the duplicitous, sleazy house honcho. He was really into it and very convincing in a comical way. I commend the cast for their professionalism in executing the roles with sincerity. It must have been difficult for them.
Could have done without Jamie's junk but Quentin's homage to Ken Norton in 'Mandingo' was just too much for him to pass up. Leo was almost convincing and perhaps he should concentrate on roles featuring perverts with dental hygiene problems.
Again, TOO LONG. Also, Tarantino's fascination with Waltz and these extended scenes of dialog. It worked in his WW2 epic but now it's gotten old.

...both have a knack for offball humor.
...of the way the slaves were treated was a little hard for you to take?
How much has changed in the gritissippi of today?
They are shown marching along in chains as modern-day rap music plays?
What's he saying?
You think slaves were treated like that everywhere all the time? The movie started in Texas, remember? Foxx was pretty beat up from that, wasn't he?
Your childish attempts to equate anything I say with my state (as if it is a really bad place) is completely uninformed. Why don't you stop your ignorant rants and stick to the subject.

...where it was filmed.
In the story it was located in the most hateful, backwards, poor, least educated state in the US.
And it remains.
no wonder twits like you vote democrat. You believe any and everything.

BTW, I'm pretty sure New Mexico could lay legitimate claim on being our nation's leading backwater. Other than Sante Fe and maybe Taos it ain't got dick. Roswell is yer next biggest attraction? What a bunch a yahoos.

As long as it's Waltz delivering it I'm good. Those talky skanks in Death Proof Car delivering it? Not good.....
Yea, it was longish but what scenes would you have cut? From reading discussions at IMDB there seemed to be one major character with an interesting story line, Scotty, totally cut out.

Not sure why QT feels a need to do that unless he actually thinks they makes him a great screenwriter. Waltz opening "monolog" in IB was intriguing and had a point but his ramblings throughout DU seemingly pointless to me.

not because of Leo just the storyline got a bit mundane. Christoph and Quentin are a match made in heaven IMO, and of course Quentin got the most of every scene and photo op. The shootouts (plenty) looked like cans of tomato soup were flying every time someone got shot - just a bit over the top...
I preferred it to the self important IB.

also the homage to pistols that don't run out of bullets was sneaky but nice.

with nice chemistry and the picture started rolling again til the end
good ol Q delivers again
entertained Tarantino-style. I will probably be disappointed as Q hit his nadir with 'Pulp Fiction'.
