Charles Durning, Esteemed Character Actor and War Veteran, Dies at 89
Charles Durning, an iconic character actor and war hero, died on Christmas Eve in New York of natural causes. He was 89.
Durning typified the actor known more by face than by name, appearing in movies as diverse as cross-dressing comedy “Tootsie,” crime drama “Dog Day Afternoon” and musical comedy “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.”
The latter earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, a feat he duplicated a year later for his performance in Mel Brooks’ “To Be or Not to Be.” Durning never won an Oscar or Emmy despite repeat nominations, but did win a Golden Globe and a Tony.

That was the main reason Deniro wasn't in Bad Santa, his schedule was too packed doing those trite roles
he's so much beyond that he couldn't fit the Santa role in though he wanted to do it.Apparently he has ex-wives and kids that have made selecting roles less of an artistic challenge
and more of a financial consideration. Can't really blame him, and certainly can't blame Durning for doing so either.Durning sure could bite deep into the right part when he needed to though and
rise to the occasion. He was really outstanding in "Rescue Me".
