talented actor. He very much deserved a Best Oscar for, "Hollywoodland." Before that, he was a stand out in, "Boiler Room."
Ben is very understated, usually, in his performances. For those accustomed to the usual American actor with his tics, constantly moving eyes, finger mannerisms, etc. it is a shock.
Follow Ups:
I think Affleck is going to prove a better director than actor. His movies have been decent and seem to be improving.
Affleck is just a tall, handsome, humorous guy with limited acting ability. Meaning most of his fans are women.

Not in the same ballpark as pretty boy Pitt for example.

A pox on his family and 100 years of bad luck for the inventor of "Intelligent Touchpads" for laptops!!!
Actors like them are a dime a dozen. Not what I think of as Oscar material.

when he's jokey.
...by making him a mockery of himself. In O Brother Where Art Thou, they brilliantly cast him as a charismatic, smooth-talking scammer, which is pretty much exactly what he is.

By the way, I'm surprised or maybe even impressed that you haven't chimed in with a snide comment about Schindler's List.

righteous, somewhat.
You see bigotry everywhere, it's what defines you.
"Mr. Tarantino follows “Inglourious Basterds,” his action-cartoon about the Holocaust, with an even bolder provocation: a blaxploitation spaghetti western about American slavery. More than any other director he tests and extends the power of pop-culture fantasy to engage the painful atrocities of history." (sorry, can't re-find the source).
And Ben Affleck... good director, good actor.
Not at all over-rated.
