It is below bad. I think it was meant to be a caricature.

I don't know what you've seen Vic, but to be fair, these episodes are sequential. The current builds on what went prior. To see them as stand-alone periods takes away the context. I don't know if if your opinion would be different, but I think you might like the series better if you saw all (3 so far) in sequence. I can't speak to how real all of it could be, but its been entetaining as a whole.
I think its a lot better than standard television fare, which is why I called it out here.
Movies always have the great advantage over television series. The writers don't have to script for hour-long containment, and they usually have a full story with conclusion to work with. Television writers may start off well, but mid-season find themselves without a destination or know how much time they have to get to it. Audience can't always be there every week to follow, so sooner otr later, everyone loses the story. On the flip side, we can always change the channel. If stuck with a turkey in a theater or renting a cd, we're just out of luck.
All that said, I think the series has merit. But I said series, not casual drop in viewing.
I don't think you can put that series next to Sopranos, as someone suggested - I think there is ocean separating the two.
The Sopranos was nearly perfect in most respects, technically as well as from the production, directing and acting standpoints.
By comparison The Americans has all the features of a low budget production. You feel like you are watching one of the cold-war cliche-driven B-movies, with caricature-derived evil KGB men in their poorly fitted suits and uniforms.
Heck, after so many years, could the producers at least get some idea on the uniforms and interior decorations? There are scores of Russian and Soviet films that could be used as models, it is not like it's been a state secret.
And on minor note - how many days do you think that guy was lying in the trunk without a trip to bathroom? :)

No doubt LOTS of scrubbing.
But after a couple of days it would take flame thrower, not scrubbing.
Anyway, I saw two episodes and I am totally underwhelmed.
