The British five-part mini-series is easy to recommend... not just because of fine writing and acting all over, but also thanks to an interesting insight into their justice system.
Certainly not a date movie, gritty and brutal, as any prison film would be, but with wonderful characters, and yet another chance to see the late Pete Postlethwaite - and what an actor we lost!
Comes with justifiably high imdb rating of 7.7... if that matters to you! :)

Long parade of wonderfully defined, strong characters, good guys, bad guys, they all get engraved into your memory. How do they manage to reach that level of poignancy I don't know, but it is there, in every frame. It is a nail biter from start to finish, its greatest achievement, perhaps, in leaving so many loose ends, just like in real life.
No syrupy simplistic resolutions, with everyone applauding, none of that Hollywood crap, just the acute, and nearly painful, sense of reality.
A must.

Never seen it. Brittan has this knack of developing actors that are very good and are not even superstars. They blend into a story so well without being an anachronism of themselves. To heck with 'American star power'.
No trivialities here, there is just a shin of glorification, but in several cases just as you thought you have figured the guy out, he/she surprises you.
