I watched Siskel and Ebert from the days of PBS. It was just a short weekly show that kept me up to date on new movies. They were criticized for dumbing down movie criticism and the up-down thumbs being too simplistic. But it worked for me- a quick review, get some idea whether it was of interest to me. So I watched the man weekly for years. It was quite bad to see Siskel slurring his words and then brain cancer took him. Then Ebert had his serious cancer, lost his voice and his ability to eat, but still kept doing movie reviews and keeping a good attitude, in public at least. Just last night, the news was the cancer had returned- it is progressive, but one never knows how many months or years there are. Just one day, as it turned out. I'll miss his presence on the TV and in print.

This news has affected me to a surprising degree. I very much enjoy debating over anything that I feel strongly about and knowledgeable of, and that's exactly what I loved about him. The actual film in question was almost irrelevant, it was how he first presented, then defended his opinion of it that was so important and enjoyable whether I felt the same or not. I had to fight my eyes after reading this today:
