Not a bad diversion for a summer afternoon. Sure, it's not in 3D but you will survive. Sporting a semi-heavy weight cast and a script that has enough twists and turns that will be entertain you beyond trying to actually figure out what's what.
Eisenberg, Caine, and Freeman all do typical yeoman turns at their roles while Ruffalo goes over the top and Laurent dead fishes it a bit. Nonetheless, the spectacle carries the day.
Not great but not awful, either. It beats going to another moronic summer blockbuster or animated 3D kiddie wonder.
Follow Ups:
Had to get out of the house with my two kids and this was the only movie they would agree to. Starts off smart but loses steam quickly and falls into cliches. Has a twist that anyone who understands Hollywood logic will easily see coming a mile away. Biggest problem is that the movie shifts from the interesting characters (magicians) to the very boring and annoying cops. I would say matinee price viewing at best, better to see it when it quickly gets to the low budget theaters.
Has Morgan ever been a really bad guy before? I can't remember that he has been a snake.
...Guess I don't understand Hollywood logic because I didn't see the twist coming until it was revealed. I thought I was being allowed to be one step ahead of everything when I was really two steps behind.
Overall, I found "Now You See Me" to be more entertaining and satisfying than the current crop of space and superhero stuff out there at the moment.
Nothing profound but good mindless summer fun. 3.5/5
