Then he continues.
Another brilliant scene was between Walken and Hopper. The "eggplant/cantelope" comments were pure ad lib according to Tarrantino (writer). He said it was a miracle the movie survived that scene because it was the high point of the film and it was before midpoint.
James Gandolfini was a big reason why. A very, very sad day. R.I.P.

I don't know anything about the guy, but from the trailers I've seen I figured he was at least late 50's.
