Oh my. What an original summer movie idea. Well let me tell you, this film has at least twice the gravitas of Starship Troopers because its bugs are many times larger and stronger. The plot is something akin to Rocky meets Godzilla and is guaranteed not to tax your brain or keep you guessing.
The excitement expressed over the CGI effort is completely off base. This looks like any other CGI movie and no new ground is broken here. The only thing broken is the acting and direction. The only mildly amusing part is Ron Perlman's sleezy monster parts dealer who resells bone and tissue to the exotic markets around the world.
del Toro has a hang up with hammer-headed eyeballed creatures that will probably give younger kids nightmares. If you are eleven or older there will be no problem with bed wetting over this too long film.
Word to the wise: The trend of a bonus scene in the middle of the credits applies here.
Rating: One chipmunk cheek full of squid tentacles.
Follow Ups:
...nothing too serious and obviously tongue-in-cheek in places but I found myself smiling throughout the entire overblown spectacle. Really liked the lack of opening credits too! Overall, ALOT better than The Lone Ranger.
but the serious scenes are boring and mostly filler between the fights
throw in a couple of surprises and a cute little girl in a back story and you have a film that is a notch below the first Transformers
IMO of course
are dealing with childhood nightmares - I am sure Pacific Rim does too...
nothing is more boring than the truth - bukowski
More likely he's just a money-grubbing sellout. Pan's Lab was a great film, but it wasn't without its flaws. At this rate it will be the last thing he does worth watching.
