The Dark Knight Rises.
Prometheus.
The Hobbit.
Star Trek into Darkness.
Man of Steel.
I could go on, but you get the point. More 'event' movies are awful than are good. And I do mean awful. Just terrible. I wish I could 'un-see' all these movies.
I'm looking forward to the next season of 'Person of Interest' more than I am pretty much any movie I can think of.

Follow Ups:
The goal of "event" movies is first and foremost to get folks to stand in line to watch the "event" ...the primary goal is financial, not artistic. Like a concert or a ballgame... the quality of the "event" is of little concern to the organizers, so long as the house is packed.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
I might check out the Hobbit after the other two films in the trilogy are made available in their extended editions. I don't have patience to see a piece of a story. As for most reboots, I agree it's a waste of time. I do think Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was something special, though. And my blah blah about Prometheus is well known.

...but doesn't that happen most summers?
It's the fact that the blockbusters seem to suck so profoundly.
I cannot remember such a string of really bad 'event' movies.
Ever.

...Prometheus (I know), nearly all recent "event" movies have been aimed at adolescents, primarily males IMO. But who has a lot of discretionary income and will soon have a lot of discretionary time on their hands? Retiring baby boomers! Hollywood will either recognize this and change course or it will crash and burn as a famous director/producer type recently opined. Personally, I have faith they'll figure things out but I think it's going to take a while. In the mean time, school begins in a couple of days so adolescent males will have other things to occupy their spare time besides summer blockbuster action movies. Hopefully, Hollywood knows this.

...just offering an opinion as to why "...blockbusters seem to suck so profoundly." You don't have to agree but if you consider differing opinions or alternate views to be a form of "threadjacking", what can I say? Au revoir!
Movies now make the bulk of their profits overseas.
Sadly, TV isn't much better. The only thing on I'll watch is Game of Thrones, and season 3 isn't coming out on disc until Feb.

films are going in that direction I think
which is why I watch older films from America and foreign countries...
I just wait and wait and wait for something good.I have completely passed over anything superhero ( I can't even think of a good one). The only things recently that were half pleasing were some silly low budget comedies like 'Were the Millers'. Dumb as heck but at least watchable.

Were the 1st and 2nd Spiderman, The Avengers, and the 2nd Wolverine. They all stayed pretty true to the original comic book stories and the advent of really good CGI made the superhero deeds quite believable.
I absolutely could not tolerate the latest Spiderman flick, it strayed so far from the original storyline and the actor who portrayed Spiderman was not nearly as good as Toby. And Kirsten Dunst provided the definitive Mary Jane portrayal. And Lord knows she is certainly easy on the eyes!
Also, the portrayal of Aunt May was quite good...

When I was a kid in the fifties, I just loved comic books. Superman was quite good back then. There was a kid next door that had piles of them (only child he was). I couldn't afford them even at 10 cents each. 10 cents could buy a couple candy bars back then. These movies don't seem to capture some escence of them. Maybe I'm just getting old and fussy( even candy bars don't taste as good now). But I keep looking out for good movies.
