I liked the first one and even liked Avengers, but Iron Man III was aweful. Barely watchable, unless you just wanted to vegetate and enjoy the CGI.

Follow Ups:
frankly I do not think comics translate to film very well to begin with
the imagination does better with a comic story than a literal translation on screen
You're right--it is tough to translate comics to film--but a good director will be able to figure out a way. IMO, Nolan has had the most success so far with the dark knight trilogy. It doesn't try to be a comic book, but more of a morality tale. I also liked Sam Rami's interpretation of Spidey and Snyder's 300, which tried to be a much closer interpretation.
Ultimately, translating a comic book for film has the same challenges as a book. It's about minimizing or eliminating the problems and distilling the characters and plot into a script that works.

...the sequals of comic book action films are rarely as good as the first.
By the time they get to #3, they have usually completely run out of ideas.
But I thought Gwyneth looked terrific.
I disagree, it's not about running out of ideas; it's more about the studio forcing its ideas into the script, creating an incoherent mess.

I watched it last night "on Demand" through FIOS. $5.99. It came with a 48 hr window. So, if I wanted to, I could watch it again and again as much as I like, for 48 hours. Once was enough for me. 23 hours to go.
Typically, when I sign on to view a movie like this one I do take some pleasure in the high class CGI and first rate set design that one expects. Eye candy does work for me. But the weak plot line and rather gimmicky Ironman suit developments that were happening in this movie made it hard to suspend any disbelief.
There were some interesting plot twists. re: who's the bad guy, really! But, after its all told, that came off like cheesy mis-direction. And the super-human physical capabilities the opponents in this film had did not seem plausible for me. Too much comic book. Not quite enough reality to sell it.
It did seem to settle a few personal issues with the core characters. In its way, the movied seemed to say that this is the last Ironman feature film. And,fwiw, it definitely doesn't deserve another sequel if this is the level of story telling we are to expect.
Perhaps we will see Ironman in an Avengers sequel. But I'd imagine that that sequel, like so many others, would be anti-climactic in comparison to its debut installment.
Oh well. At least the first Ironman movie was good. Such is life, I guess.

Saw that one coming a mile off. It was like "The Village" all over again, except I still think Favreau has some talent as opposed to M Night Dingaling. In the IM trilogy, Favreau was a victim of his own success on the first movie, which caused the studio to get way too heavily involved in the sequels.I can't understand how this got a decent rating from anyone.
I agree with you, an Avengers sequel will most likely be a mess. I'm amazed the first one was any good.

I barely made it through I, didn't bother with 2. Skipped Avengers-maybe if the BD drops to $1, I'll get it to watch Scarlett Johanson.
At this point, it way past time to let the "comic book based movies" ship sail into the sunset.

Not great cinema by any means, but better than the standard Hollywood schlock that they put out usually.
And it could be worse, they could have put George Clooney and Sandra Bullock in it,
Yuck!!!!!!!!!
(You could not pay me enough to go and watch Gravity!)
