and very little racing action. I guess the cool bluish tone was to make it look like it was from the 70's when all the action took place. The film focused on Hunt's man-child behavior and Lauda's propensity to be the party pooper of the year. (It is hard to believe that Lauda was this difficult but that is for him to know and us to guess.)
Hemsworth was overly buff and gregarious while Bruhl generated a lot of intensity. Definitely two very different guys. The film has a story slant towards Hunt but shows us the history of both men coming of age. The acting was middle of the road but the story delivered on their rivalry and admiration for each other.
It is enjoyable even with its tendency for triteness and cliche.

Went with my sister last night, she new nothing of F1 racing...when it was raining in Japan for the final race scene...she was cringing in her seat...she kept saying there is nothing to those cars, did not realize how small, fast and light they were...that they sat on the gas tank...those drivers had balls of steel...RH did do a good job of putting you in the car...
I remember that race on the Wide World of Sports, I was 13 years old...my younger brother had the match box cars of Lotus Elf, the Johnny Walker Black, and the McLaren Marlboro...I believe Ferrari would not sell their image to Mattel...not sure on that one...
I did like the Enzo Ferrari scenes...pompous arrogant Dago...reminded of my DAD, also a pompous arrogant Dago...so I have no idea where I get it from??!!??
F1 is still my favorite racing, crazy technology, world wide appeal and stupid expensive to support a team, lots of cloak and dagger still...and not one continuous left turn...I DVR all the races...I still love the standing starts and the sound of those engines screaming at such high RPM's...
Film was well cast and acted for the most part...I have a nephew that is an extremely good looking young man...so when I tell my sister he looks like and Formula 1 driver...she finally got that reference and said yes he does....
thanks
Mark
Was exercised in Rush.
Hunt and Lauda enjoyed a friendly relationship, having known each other for many years prior to the events of 1976. In fact Lauda stayed with Hunt durring visits to GB early in their respective careers.
While Hunt's persona was very much the "fast living playboy" he was just as committed to success as Lauda.
Virtually no mention is made of Hunt's background with Hesketh....which is what gave him the credibility to have been chosen by McLaren to succeed Fittapaldi. Vs the treatment of Lauda's background at BRM (one test drive causes Lauda to tell the engineers to redesign the car) and Ferrari.
Rightly however, much of the focus is on the the 76 season. And RH has stated that his intent was not to create a documentary, but rather an entertaining movie based on real events.
Best,
Ross
IMO Daniel Bruhl's portrayal of Nikki Lauda steals the film. Lauda was (is) famously direct, focused and socially blunt, a brilliant driver and astute analyst of his sport. He is IRL much the difficult personality as portrayed in the filmmaker . Currently an auto race broadcast commentator, Lauda is revered in his native Austria and still famous in racing circles - except in US which remains resistant to Formula One racing.
Hemsworth is very good as James Hunt, whom he remarkably resembles. He brings a welcome charm and vulnerability to a role that could have been a cliche. (The hard partying Hunt was rumored to have slept with 5000 (!!) women). Supporting cast is excellent but very much in background as the Hunt-Lauda rivalry takes center stage.
The racing scenes are terrific, the cinematography is gorgeous. Those of you you who were around in thethe 70s will find much to savor in background details. It's also a return to form of sorts for Howard, on a similar level to Frost/Nixon. I have a few minor issues with the script (a scene late in film where Hunt confronts a journalist) but Rush is very beautifully crafted and much better than I expected. If you like racing it's a must see.
I was intrigued by Lauda's retort to hunt, "I know I look like a rat." I had never put my finger on that particular descriptor for him but he is right.

I guess that makes Hunt the Bill Wyman of formula one.
if I see it
thanks Phil
I'm not a Ron Howard fan - I disliked A Beautiful Mind and think he generally has difficulty with the endings in many of his movies, a trait he shares with the vastly more talented Stephen Spielberg.
BUT...Rush is higly entertaining and is no more cliched and trite than say...The Butler. (Puts on flameproof suit.)
The real life events of the 1976 F1 championsh series are so dramatic in themselves that one could be forgiven for thinking them a screenwriter's invention. But Lauda really did drive in the final season race in Japan only 6 weeks after being severely burned in a horrific race crash in Germany. He and Hunt were neck and neck for the world title, separated by only a few points. Etc etc. If the plot was total fiction you wouldn't buy it. But even though I knew what happened before I saw Rush, I still enjoyed it a lot, and if you like suto racing it's worth a view for those scenes alone.
btw nice to see you post
best

Rush is no Citizen Kane but definitely worth catching on the big screen.
It's a fine popcorn flick so buy some popcorn and have fun!
and Frost Nixon didn't exactly suck
