From the reviews I've seen there is still a lot of Hank's worship going on. He put in his stock performance the first two thirds of the film only to turn on the emotions near the end. When he was finally rescued I fully empathized with his condition, reactions, and feelings. This alone may make it worth the trip. On the other hand, this strikes me as a reality-based 'Gravity' being somewhat of an audience pleaser by covering all the dramatic and action bases.
The film is just over two hours and thoroughly covers hijacking while giving us the unique perspective of pirates and their motivations. For the Somali life is a desperate matter and anything that betters their condition is acceptable. Kudos to the cast that portrayed them.
Follow Ups:
The Somalis stopping ships in their territorial waters do not call themselves pirates. They called themselves a coastal defense force and they were targeting ships engaged in dumping toxic waste in their waters. Since these waters contain the food supply Somalia depends on, they rightly saw these intrusions as a direct threat to their survival.
They would capture the offending ships and demand a fine be paid. The world media calls them "pirates" and the fines, "ransom", so the US sent in warships to make the kill.
The small Somali launch ran out of fuel and they were trying to surrender, but the US has to always look butch to the rest of the world and so shot the Somalis like fish in a barrel. Such is Hollywood and the mass media's spin on another "heroic" act by the empire.
who was "kidnapped" twice during his years there. He said they were nice and the second time they were hijacked (supply boat) an army officer was in charge of the operation. He said it's good to have a lot of Casio watches as the hijackers love them.
he was supposed to stay 600 miles away and he was 250 away to save money (on fuel I presume) and put his crew in danger
so the movie has it's critics because Phillips was not portrayed this way

The legal actions in Alabama (PDF) and Texas (PDF) seek unspecified monetary damages. The suits do not name Phillips or formally accuse him of wrongdoing. A trial is scheduled to begin in Mobile, Ala., in December.
“I want moviegoers to know that the true heroes are the Navy marksmen and Navy personnel who bailed out the shipping company and Captain Phillips,” Brian Beckcom, the Houston attorney representing nine of Phillips’s former subordinates in their suits against Maersk Line and Waterman Steamship Corp., said at a press conference on Thursday. He described his clients as “the brave crew members who fought back against the pirates.” The plaintiffs claim a variety of physical and emotional injuries.
I saw something on Hanks' love of history and skewing it to make a better movie. Guess this is part of it.
I may not see it at all
Hollywood creative license.
Turns out the end of the story has now been revised compared to the original "official" press.
No "3 shot" sniper kills.
And, the messy matter of the missing $30k cash.
Justifiable and the 30k is far far less than what the ship line would've had to pay in death benefits and/or insurance claims.
Note the $30k "vanished", after being handed over to the pirates, who were subsequently all killed/ 1 captured.
I distinctly remember the story in Time magazine at the time, complete with the graphic of the 3 snipers at the stern of the Bainbridge.
My only observation is the difference in the story line at the time vs. what was revealed in the story this week. I try to maintain a healthy skepticism at "initial reports" of anything, until much later. Usually it takes a year or 3 until a book comes out, or there's an investigative journalism piece later on.
The most infamous case might be the whole Jessica Lynch story, surpassed in disgust and tragedy only by the Pat Tillman incident.

...that Blu.
It's difficult for me to believe that Israel would field a tank in such poor condition and staffed by a bunch of incompetents.

I thought they seemed fairly competent. If you really want to see Israeli soldiers depicted as incompetent, try this one.

One of those depressing, fog-of-war epics that concentrates on the strain and confusion of it all. Could have done without the artsy beginning or ending and funny that it showed our protagonist coming home from a few hard days of war right back to a normal setting as if nothing had changed.
