...the critics have been raving about this film, its realistic portrayal of slavery and Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance. It is very well done, the actors are spectacular - Ejiofor should win an Oscar - and it's very believable (except for producer Brad Pitt's small part).
But...as depressing, brutal and relentless as the film is, it didn't really move me. It was as though I were watching a documentary from a distance.
I thought Gravity was a better film and more involving.

I think you nailed it.
...I also enjoyed last years Oscar nominated Django Unchained more - supposedly the most realistic depiction of the antebellum South until 12 Years.
Tarantino had more fun with it.
me like 12 Years... did. Presuming the movie didn't take liberties with the story, whether the Pitt scene was believable or not, it was true. I'd say Fassbinder would be a frontrunner for supporting actor as well. I kept waiting for a kindness, even the most minor one showing he at least had a shred of humanity, to emerge from his character......FTR, I really liked both films. Just 12 Years a tad more.
