I think you're being kind calling Astaire's acting outdated but, oddly enough, it worked. I doubt there was a dry eye in the house when Waltzing Matilda was played at the end. I've seen it at least a half dozen times and I still water up and I'm one crusty old S.O.B.. This one, along with another of its genre, Fail Safe, are always watched at Casa Nasty when they come on (not nearly often enough IMHO). What wonderful civilized takes on such uncivilized actions.

Follow Ups:
I'm trying to think of favorites.
For zombie apocalypse, I actually liked watching 28 days and 28 Weeks Later. But, that's 'entertainment,' and not 'film.'
The original Planet of the Apes was sly.
I seem to recall liking 12 Monkeys, but I don't recall much of it.
Book of Eli seemed greatly underappreciated. I enjoyed it a lot. High on my list.
Would Silent Running count?
I'll stop with Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. Cheesy, but I love that film!

but since we were talking about post apocalyptic movies....
I guess TV's Battlestar Galactica would count as well but not as good as the movies mentioned.

Slow afternoon at the Nasty's, looking at it on TMC now, whilst listening to the sultry Holly Cole sing Tom Waits.

mouthing of her costar in, "The Brown Bunny."
I think it's still the only instance of a true star giving a bj onscreen.
She stars in a new drama (Those Who Kill) as a cop with more mental problems than the perps she arrests. On A&E, the pilot is being rerun all this week. Haven't seen it yet (set to record on dvr) and don't have high hopes, but she does quality quirky quite well.

Quirky could be a deserved adjective for this six part series with Ms. Sevigny.

small, art house films.
We can all be relieved that, after many years of having a "girlfriend," Chloe now acclaims that she likes men.
"Hit and Miss" sounds like a description of men hitting on her.
Without giving away too much, she plays a male-to-female transgender assassin (mid-stream so she still has equipment from both genders) who discovers she has fathered a child from a now-deceased former lover. Her adapting to the role of parent while maintaining her profession leads to some interesting situations. It's filmed in the UK and the interplay between the various family members and other characters is done well.

it's on there now. And yes, it was a new one on me, too. :)
