Gainsbourg. Appallingly ugly, wretchedly emaciated. A walking, breathing, human copy of Olive Oyl.
The film has gotten (The New Yorker) interesting reviews. I suppose, with all the graphic violence commonly featured in film these days, we could have foreseen this frontal (harrumph!) assault on what little remains of sexual mores. Myself, I'd settle for watching what many have named the greatest film of all time, though if so it's definitely the least seen of all contenders, "La Mere et La Putain," by Jean Eustache.

Try this light romantic comedy on for size. Char is quite good and it softens her looks.
He went with that look for a reason, eh?
After that character's story arc, you were expecting Kate Beckinsale?

And no, Ms. Gains isn't considered ugly by the director. She's considered some sort of French royalty because of her Dad.
Anyhow, ugly is bad enough. Ugly doin' the nasty is worse. Ugly doin' it repeatedly, "artistically," for hours on end? Insufferable.
