The Great Beauty.
The Past.
All is Lost.
Wadjda.
Frances Ha.
No.
Films that reviewers liked and that looked very interesting but that haven't hit Netflix yet:
Like Someone in Love.
Museum Hours (well, Netflix has it, but the wait is months and months [so far]).
No, you won't find TWOWS or 12 Years or American Hustle: these are unoriginal, formulaic films, though expertly and excellently done. In a few years, no one will remember them.

and couldn't take anymore. If you dislike unoriginal, formulaic films, it is curious that this film is on your list. Whether the ripoffs of Breathless, from the editing, to the photography, to the soundtrack, were intentional or not, original it ain't.
This is a movie that hates men.
HATES THEM.

who was hitting an age at which many bright folks (of both sexes) have to face a decision: continue chasing a dream or realize it may never happen.
Frances is an original character, not a little based on the actress, herself, and filmed by her significant other.
As far as it being derivative: I certainly don' see anything at all of Breathless in it, excepting it's also black and white.
Yes, the sun shines out of her ass and she shits marble. She's so wonderful and vibrant and alive, she's just a Goddess.
And men are creeps with weird sexual problems.

Frances was a failure at what she loved. She found "suits" boring and was shocked her best friend didn't. All pretty realistic, I thought. Her ebullience was infectious, to me and a lot of other viewers.
As far as man-hating, I think you may be bringing some personal stuff to that? Noah Baumbach is a guy. Married to Jennifer Jason Leigh.
but a worthy Oscar winner.

There are so many soso slave movies and this one directed by a foreigner to boot. Did not deserve an Oscar.
Roots is the most heart wrenching saddest movie ever. Take any one episode, its a masterpiece in acting and direction. Remember Kissy being taken away?

uplifting theme, I'm going to hate it. Slavery didn't have a bright side. NO one suffered it and triumphed. That's the fact. Sometimes, shit happens. Falsifying history to make suffering noble isn't realistic.
Rant over, I'll see it.
...is not predictable?
You mean Redford dies?

bad guys played as bad to the bone, not eccentric miscreants. Slaves were most definitely not singing Camptown Ladies whilst working in the fields.

I recently watched American Hustle. What a convoluted mess. The best film from the Academy picks was Nebraska IMO.

was yet another. Earlier, we had the Robert Duvall/Bill Murray dud. I'm afraid we're about to have an avalanche of old guy films. Yawn….
All is Lost was an old guy flick!-- very watchable slightly mesmerizing if you were in the mood
very good I thought too.
