portraying a loser with an evil past who kind of wants to do better. That's the intriguing part: he knows and appears to be able to control himself, but he may just be choosing to self-destruct.
He meets a young man who's caught up in a family with plenty of its own evil, but, unlike Joe, he seems unable to take the necessary steps to protect himself.
This has echoes of the superb, "Winter's Bone," with the young man's father a truly multi-dimensional creep: I've not often seen a supporting character drawn with such complexity. You don't feel you're watching an actor---- he's truly frightening.

a semi-drifter from the town where it was filmed. He died several months after filming. He did great for a rank amateur. Cage has been on a low-arc of portraying earthy characters. I guess living in NOLA does that to a person.
And I mean, any.
