'Deliver Us From Evil': Move the hell out of the Bronx . . .

Eric Bana plays Sgt. Ralph Sarchie who seems to have caught a large number of "unusual" or "supernatural" cases during his career. This film melds some of these experiences into a single storyline which involves Sarchie, his family, his partner, a priest, and Sarchie's spiritual life.

The film begins in Iraq where a squad of Marines chase "bad guys" in a fire fight and end up in an underground den with lots of skeletons, Latin inscriptions, and a very hostile host that grabs hold of them. They return to the USA after being dishonorably discharged and begin a very strange life of ritual crime. This is where Sarchie becomes involved.

Bana basically plays Bana and he affects a "Bronx" accent to play his part. (We won't discuss how genuine his accent is.) He does fine and his partner Jimmy (Chris Coy) adds a comedic kick to the first part of the film. Edgar Ramirez plays the Jesuit in Jeans who helps Sarchie find and handle the bad guys who take orders from below. The movie is fast-paced, very graphic (and even too bloody at times) but lacks the dramatic gravitas to make it a very scary movie. The film was edited for maximum fright value so don't get too careless with your sodas or popcorn lest they be propelled airborne. So, this is "entertaining" without being truly terrifying and you can tell it was engineered that way...no Exorcist here.

Probably best seen at home because there are no real compelling reasons to see it at the walkie. IMDb gives 7.0 to my 2.4 outta five.

We both liked it.
(Of course we're both horror movie fans.)
The plot was somewhat predicable, but fairly well done nonetheless.
The acting was acceptable, (especially by the antagonist who did a good job, IMHO).
There was a fair degree of gore, but it wasn't over the top.
All in all I would give it a 7 out of 10.

    I guess it was supposed to be creepy, which it kinda was.
    And yeah, looking under the bed, or in the closet, is always an anxious moment for any kid as I recall from my youth.
    
    SPOILER ALERT!
    
    My daughter and I are both pretty immune to the usual jump scenes in scary movies, but when the dog came out, we jumped pretty good, as did the entire, and I mean ENTIRE, audience. (My wife is particularly susceptible to them, which is why we tend to leave her at home when we go to see scary movies.)
