I've seen Rome, Lonesome Dove, and Deadwood and really liked all three (liked Dexter, too, but less so--- too repetitive).
Follow Ups:
...don't watch much TV but Homeland's 3 seasons is a fave.
New one starts in October.
Then there's Veep - really funny.
Geez, I can't believe it first ran thirty five years ago.
Worth a look if I remember correctly...
Blundered into it from the beginning on WTTW in Chicago back in the day, and was careful not to miss an episode. Would love to give it a viewing today...
BBC production late seventies. Available as a complete series on DVD.
Excellent cast.
Excellent intrigue.
Double dealing, back stabbing, throat cutting, poison giving, incest, orgies of the first order. It gets no better than this. For mature audiences, not the kids.

Good cast (Sam Neil, the hot brunette from JAG, Eric Stolz, etc) and fun for science fiction fans.

Try "Reilly: Ace of Spies" with Sam Neill and Leo Mckern (sp?). Waiting for it to come out on Blu-ray, some day. You can find the BBC-Thames series on dvd. Loved it. The theme music is the Romance movement from Dmitri Shostakovich's The Gadfly Suite.

...is going to be just the ticket!
Oh... did I confuse you with Grits? Nevermind... just let yourself go!
Don't know why I am watching it... but in reality it is not badly made... once you detach yourself from all that gore.
It is gritty.

Leiv Schrieber, Jon Voight, and James Woods are just the biggest names in a great cast.
...at the gym who watch a lot of cable TV series when their wives aren't around rave about the sex in this and love it.
Also Banshee on Cinemax.
Try 'Taken'. 20 hours. Made for the Sci-Fi channel, I find it very entertaining.
I enjoyed
Orange is the new black (superb acting)
Spiral
Braquo
House of cards (The original British version)

nothing is more boring than the truth - bukowski
Altho I would call them continuing Deadwood and Rome dramas moreso than miniseries. We loved the first 4 or so seasons of Dexter. Repetitive would have been preferable to what the last 2-3 seasons devolved into. As for continuing dramas the list, in this current golden age if tele, is near unending, here's a few of my other favs:Fargo (a 1 season series)
The Wire
Breaking Bad
The Killing (ignore the fanboi outcry over the Season 1 non ending, it was worth the wait, vis a vis, Season 2, Season 3 was excellent as well)
The Bridge
The Shield
Homeland (1st two seasons)
The Sopranos
Game of Thrones (it gets better each season)
Boredwalk Empire
First two seasons of True Blood
Treme(!!!)
John Adams (a true miniseries)
Generation Kill, ditto
Band of Bros
The Tudors(!!!, great, even with a milquetoast performance from the lead)
Sleeper Cell (mini series)
Bates Motel, with Vera Farmiga lighting up every scene she's in what's not to like
The Americans

In "Dead Like Me," Mandy Patinkin crews a team of Grim Reapers in
Seattle. And Garrett Dillahunt's performance as the terminator Cromartie
in the last season is delightful beyond any expectations. Lucky you, if
you have these to look forward to. Regards,
J.R.

Have you caught season 4 of the Killing yet? Six parts, it was released all at once on Netflix on August 1st. I haven't watched it yet.
The ending is a real teaser! :)

John Doman is the tough talking, ever scheming Pope whose children (Cesare and Lucretzia) become accomplished in handling family business no matter what it takes. This will keep you occupied and will ultimately make you question the Mother Church. The first episode showing how Rodrigo bribed Cardinals to vote for him is quite discouraging for the faithful.
Not the greatest but more action (and skin) than the Jeremy Irons (PG) version.
NOT safe for family or small prying eyes.
